Strabag Oy wins ’Safest Metro Construction Site’ competition

The winner of the Länsimetro ‘Safest Metro Construction Site’ competition is Strabag Oy’s rail line project between Keilaniemi and Urheilupuisto. The review period was from July to December, 2013. The competition is organised semiannually with all current projects participating.

The current Länsimetro projects were assessed on the basis of accident frequency and civil engineering measurements (‘MVR’ in Finnish, referring to the assessment and development of safety at civil engineering construction sites). The MVR measurements for each project were weighted by 80% in the evaluation, and accident frequency by 20%.

The competition emphasised MVR measurements. Each contractor makes a weekly MVR measurement round to determine the situation and safety level at the site. These weekly inspections reveal any shortcomings in construction site safety while acknowledging the things that have been carried out properly.

The construction site was presented with the Länsimetro ‘Safest Metro Construction Site’ competition trophy, a gilded piece of rail track.

New contractors chosen

Five west metro contract agreements were signed the 26th of March. Destia Rail Oy won the west metro rail line superstructure contract to complete the rail tracks and switches, including substructures. VR Track Oy will provide the tracks and switches to be installed. The superstructure contract price is approximately EUR 18 million. Construction will begin in spring 2014. The installation of tracks will begin in Ruoholahti, where they will be joined to the current metro line, and then progress to Matinkylä, to be completed by the end of 2015.

“When the track construction begins, the traffic conditions in the tunnel will change so that rubber wheel traffic will gradually give way to rail traffic as the work progresses,” says Länsimetro Oy CEO Matti Kokkinen.

Amplit Oy was awarded the Urheilupuisto station electrical contract. The total value of the contract is approximately 2.7 million euros and covers all electrical work for the station. Lemminkäinen Talotekniikka Oy won the Urheilupuisto station HVAC contract. The total value of the contract is approximately EUR 2.4 million and covers all HVAC work at the station. Work on the electric and HVAC projects will begin in spring 2014 with planning and is estimated to be completed in 2015.

Teknoware Oy and Länsimetro agreed on the delivery of safety lighting. The system covers the eight stations and rail tunnels of the west metro. The delivery includes approximately 10,000 safety and exit lights. The total contract price is approximately EUR 1.3 million. Deliveries will begin in spring 2014 and the project will be completed at the end of 2015.

Nordic LAN&WAN Communication Oy will supply the active devices for data transfer for the west metro. The targeted network delivery will provide data transfer services for critical technical systems, covering device delivery and testing as well as connection to the existing network. The value of the contract is approximately EUR 900,000. The work will begin in spring 2014 with planning and is estimated to be completed in 2015.

Construction of the west metro is progressing – start of operation to be postponed to autumn 2016

Work on the west metro has moved on from excavation to the construction phase of the stations and two parallel rail tunnels. Construction has started at all the stations, with the exception of Niittykumpu.

“Retaining wall elements have been installed over a distance of nearly nine kilometres, and ten per cent of the concrete to be used at the stations has been cast,“says Länsimetro Oy’s CEO Matti Kokkonen.

The constuction timetable is tight and requires smooth co-operation between the various operators. In addition to construction, commissioning of the metro will require automation of the old metro trains as well as implementation of a control system. Automation and delivery of the platform screen doors are postponing the start operation to autumn 2016.

“According to the timetable submitted last week by Siemens, the platform screen doors and train automation will delay the planned start of operation,” says HKL’s Managing Director Matti Lahdenranta.

Länsimetro and HKL, together with Siemens, are exploring ways to reduce the delay.

Construction of the west metro started in Ruoholahti in November 2009 and in Espoo in summer 2010. Excavations are now 99.9% complete. The rock plug at Matinsolmu will be broken through during February, which means that excavation work will have been completed.
