Testing of smoke extraction fans at Espoonlahti and Kivenlahti metro stations 11 January – 14 January 2022

Smoke extraction fans will be tested at the Espoonlahti and Kivenlahti metro stations on 11 January – 14 January 2022 from 8 am to 4 pm. During the testing, a whirring sound may be heard in the vicinity from time to time. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Smoke extraction fans are used in case of fire to blow smoke away from the underground facilities along fire-compartmented routes into the outside air. There are smoke extraction fans in the metro line’s vertical shafts and at the metro stations’ eastern and western ends. All in all, 15 smoke extraction fans have been installed on the Matinkylä–Kivenlahti section.

Ala-Kivenlahti and Ylä-Kivenlahti reflected in names of the “Wanderers”

The wooden “Wanderers” sculptures at the Kivenlahti metro station have been named Alis and Ylis. The shorter sculpture is called Alis, and the taller one is Ylis. The names of the wooden figures were chosen by a vote, with Alis and Ylis receiving 65 per cent of all votes. Voting took place from 7–17 December 2021, and a total of 1,601 votes were cast.

Sculptor Kalle Mustonen’s artwork is called “Wanderers”. The shorter sculpture is Alis, and the taller one is Ylis. The names refer to Kivenlahti’s residential areas.

Residents of Kivenlahti have given the areas of Kivenlahti the nicknames Ala-Kivenlahti (“Lower Kivenlahti”) and Ylä-Kivenlahti (“Upper Kivenlahti”), also shortened to Alis and Ylis. Three people proposed the names and explained their reasoning:

  • “Alis is used in reference to lower Kivenlahti, and Ylis refers to upper Kivenlahti.”
  • “People talk about Kivenlahti as upper Kivenlahti and lower Kivenlahti.”
  • “Folks have just been talking about Ylis and Alis (Upper and Lower Kivenlahti).”

How the names were chosen

There was an open invitation to submit names from 17 November–2 December 2021. Altogether 208 names were submitted. From among all the proposed names, the jury chose five pairs as finalists: Alis and Ylis, Antas and Tyskas, Möhkö and Mahti, Steni and Vikke, and Tullen and Mennen. The public voted for their favourite from among the finalists between 7 and 17 December 2021. A total of 1,601 votes were cast.

The Jury Chairman was the sculptor Kalle Mustonen. The jury was made up of Petteri Littu, an architect from ALA Architects, which is responsible for the architectural design of the Kivenlahti metro station; Kimmo Leivo, Project Director for the City of Espoo’s Urban Environment Sector; Toni Penttala, shopkeeper of the Kivenlahti and Kivenlahdenkatu K-Market grocery stores; and Pauliina Wiskari, owner of the Wiskarila restaurant. The Jury Secretary was Länsimetro’s Communications Manager Marianne Partanen.

Smoke extraction fan tests to take place at Matinkylä, Finnoo and Kaitaa week 50

Smoke extraction fans will be tested at the Matinkylä, Finnoo and Kaitaa metro stations and on the rail sections and the shafts (Tiistilä shaft at the address Suomenlahdentie 15, the Suomenlahdentie shaft at the address Suomenlahdentie 22 and Hyljetie shaft at the address Hyljetie 6) between them at night between 13 December and 17 December (week 50):

  • at night between 13 December and 17 December from Matinkylä to Finnoo
  • at night between 14 December and 15 December from Finnoo to Kaitaa

During the testing, a whirring sound may be heard in the vicinity from time to time. The smoke extraction fan tests will be carried out at night between 11:45 pm and 5 am when the metro is not running. The plan is to use the smoke extraction fans at the lowest power possible to avoid making noise.

Smoke extraction fans are used in case of fire to blow smoke away from the underground facilities along fire-compartmented routes into the outside air. There are smoke extraction fans in the metro line’s vertical shafts and at the metro stations’ eastern and western ends. The testing of smoke extraction fans is related to the testing of the West Metro’s Matinkylä–Kivenlahti section. The functionality of the systems is also always tested at the adjacent station, i.e. in Finnoo’s case, testing will also take place on the systems of the already operating metro station at Matinkylä. All in all, 15 smoke extraction fans have been installed on the Matinkylä–Kivenlahti section. There are 32 smoke extraction fans on the Ruoholahti–Matinkylä section.

Artwork for the West Metro extension completed – metro service will start in 2023

The artwork at the new West Metro stations has been completed. Each of the five stations features a piece of art that matches the architecture of the station. The aim is to make the stations more attractive, inviting and recognisable.

Right now, testing of the different systems in various emergency situations is underway at the Matinkylä-Kivenlahti section’s stations and metro line. The metro service is expected to start between Matinkylä and Kivenlahti during 2023.

The works of art, which represent different forms of art, must also mesh with the station’s architecture and be easy to maintain. The art makes the stations more inviting and attractive, but its purpose is also linked to the entire station’s design – it improves navigation by helping passengers tell each station apart.

“Tens of thousands of people use the metro each day. More and more travellers arrive in Espoo by metro. The metro station is our calling card and it improves people’s daily lives. Art plays a big role in making the stations more attractive and inviting,” says Susanna Tommila, Cultural Director for the City of Espoo.

The works of art were realised collaboratively by the artists, architects and station contractors as part of the stations’ construction project. Integrated into the station’s architecture and structures, the art replaces some of the station’s other structures such as sections of the platform wall. The total cost of the artwork is estimated at some EUR 1.2. million.

“Participating in the art project has been a great experience. It has been a long process from selecting the artists to the completion of the works of art. Collaboration with the stations’ architects has been excellent,” says the project’s art coordinator Jaakko Niemelä.

The creations are mostly located on the station platforms where they are also visible from the trains.

“It was important to us to add different forms of art to the West Metro’s phase two stations and we were looking for new types of innovations from each artist. At the same time, the creations are an interesting representation of each artist’s body of work. I’m delighted that art has been given such a significant role in the West Metro’s Matinkylä-Kivenlahti section,” says Pilvi Kahlama, Executive Director of EMMA.
