Systems

The West Metro has 52 technical systems, the majority of which relate to managing emergency situations. The systems ensure the safe exit of commuters in emergency situations, for instance, in the event of a fire or a power outage. The West Metro’s safety solutions make broad use of automatic property surveillance and safety systems. The safety of the spaces is monitored and controlled using automatic fire alarm and extinguishing systems. The spreading of smoke is limited in the metro stations and the tunnels by means of fire compartmentation and over-pressurisation and smoke management systems.

Data obtained from the systems is monitored, and responsive action is taken in Metropolitan Area Transport’s control room, which is located in Herttoniemi. The systems enable the real-time monitoring of, for instance, the metro stations, the metro and maintenance tunnels, emergency exit shafts, doors, elevators, escalators, smoke extraction and alarms.

The HVAC and electricity and 52 systems required by the metro are located in the metro’s technical facilities at both ends of, as well as under, the metro platform. Commuters can only see part of the metro station’s facilities. There are kilometres of passageways and hundreds of rooms underground.
