Länsimetro recommends the use of masks also during breaks

As the developer, Länsimetro Oy has asked its construction contractors working on the West Metro to draw attention to the use of masks due to the Covid-19 situation. The metro worksite contractors have strongly recommended the use of masks on the worksite and also, for example, during lunch breaks or when visiting shops. On some sites, the use of masks is mandatory. Information concerning the use of masks has been communicated in several languages on the worksites.

As the developer, Länsimetro Oy can strongly recommend that all employees use masks, but neither Länsimetro nor its contractors have the means to impose mandatory mask use by individuals outside the worksite. We can increase communication on the matter and stress the importance of acting responsibly during this difficult time.

In order to prevent the spread of the virus, construction contractors on the metro worksites have also adopted other measures besides the use of masks. Contractors recommend focussing on hygiene, getting tested for the virus with even the slightest symptoms and not coming to work when sick. In addition, the times when people arrive to work and take their meals have been staggered and, for essential meetings, people work in small groups while also wearing masks and complying with social distancing rules.

With the exception of the cases at the metro station under construction at Kivenlahti during weeks 3 and 4 (18–31 Jan.), the number of positive Covid-19 cases at Länsimetro’s worksites has been very low. The main contractor working on the Kivenlahti metro station, Skanska, published a press release (in Finnish) on the coronavirus infections at Kivenlahti on 25 January 2021. Public spaces are allowed to impress and awaken experiences – a new video series unveils the stories behind the West Metro’s eight stations from an artistic and architectural perspective

On Wednesday, 18 November 2020, it will be three years since the start of commuter traffic on the West Metro’s Ruoholahti–Matinkylä section and the inauguration of the eight new stations. In addition to the modern technological systems that guarantee functionality and safety, from the very beginning, the architectural planning of the new stations took into account different user groups, the location of the station and lighting. Each of the eight stations has its own unique identity, where the underground facilities engage in dialogue with the aboveground station environment and its characteristic features.

Länsimetro and Espoo’s City Events have collaboratively produced an eight-part video series, DESIGN.TUNNE.METRO., which will transport the viewer on an inspiring metro journey from Lauttasaari to Matinkylä. The journalist Riku Rantala explains in the videos how Otaniemi’s culturally significant linden alley was accounted for in the planning, how Lauttasaari’s dismantled iconic water tower is part of the metro station and why Tapiola station is a brilliant white.

The metro is an everyday mode of transport for its users and the video series encourages them to focus their gaze on the aesthetics of this backdrop to their daily lives and the small, carefully designed details. The West Metro’s stations are cultural destinations open to all city residents.
