Strabag to build the West Metro tunnel between Keilaniemi and Urheilupuisto

Strabag Oy won the tender for outfitting the West Metro tunnel between Keilaniemi and Urheilupuisto. The agreement was signed today; the total contract price is EUR 15.5 million. The contract covers technical construction work in a metro tunnel segment about 4 km long and the construction of five vertical shafts, including their surface buildings.

Strabag will begin the construction work as the excavation projects in the area are completed. To date, 92% (25.5 km) of the West Metro tunnels has already been excavated.

“The excavation work is almost finished. There is still some work to be done in Tapiola and Tontunmäki and between Niittykumpu and Matinkylä. Three out of the four contracts for outfitting the tunnels have already been awarded, and when excavation is completed at the end of this year, construction work will be in progress over almost all of the metro line,” says Matti Kokkinen, CEO of Länsimetro Oy.

The only station construction contracts not yet awarded are Koivusaari, Urheilupuisto and Niittykumpu; the remaining tunnel outfitting contract is that for the section between Urheilupuisto and Matinkylä. By the end of this year, there will be contractors at work at all stations and on all sections of the metro line.

Suppliers of aluminium busbars, revolving fire doors, frame insulation materials and HVAC control equipment now selected

The works contracts for Länsimetro’s aluminium busbars, revolving fire doors, frame insulation materials and HVAC control equipment were signed on 5 June. The aluminium busbar joint solution will be supplied by SPL Powerlines Sverige AB. The overall contract price is MEUR 7.3. The delivery includes the busbar solution for the underground rail line power supply, which contains the aluminium busbar clad with steel along with its brackets, protective channels and cabling as ready-installed.

The revolving fire doors will be supplied by Mesvac Oy. The value of this contract is MEUR 2.2. Delivery includes approximately 50 revolving fire doors installed in situ for all stations and the underground line itself.

Sealed Air Oy was selected as the supplier of first-class structure-borne sound insulation materials, i.e. the most common insulation materials. The value of this contract is MEUR 2.2. The commercial agreement includes 90 000 square metres of insulation material, which will be installed below the underground rail to prevent the transfer of possible vibration or frame noise into the rock and thereby into the immediate environs.

YIT Kiinteistötekniikka Oy was awarded the HVAC control equipment contract, worth approximately MEUR 1.2. The contract includes the HVAC automation system for the stations and the entire underground line, also including the control devices and actuators, control room functions and other connected systems.

To date, 89% (i.e. almost 25 kilometres) of the Länsimetro (West Metro) tunnels has been excavated.

The tunnel excavations will end in autumn of 2013. The building contracts and equipage of the tunnels have already been initiated between Ruoholahti and Keilaniemi,” relates Matti Kokkinen, CEO of Länsimetro Oy.

Open excavation begins at the Urheilupuisto station site

Lemminkäinen Infra Oy will begin open excavation in the pit at the Urheilupuisto station worksite during week 22. According a decision issued by the Uusimaa Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment, blasting work in open excavation may be carried out on weekdays (Monday to Friday) between 07.00 and 22.00, and also on Saturdays that are not public holidays between 07.00 and 22.00. Blasting in open excavation will be announced by an audible warning signal.

Drilling and scaling work, rock shattering with jackhammers, and other work causing noise and vibration will be restricted to between 07.00 and 18.00 on weekdays, although such work will also be undertaken between 18.00 and 22.00 on weekdays and Saturdays that are not public holidays as the environmental permit allows. Work done in the evening and on Saturdays makes overall progress quicker.

Other preparatory tasks in the worksite pit are being done on a 24/7 basis.

No noise-generating work will be done on 1 June, the day of end-of-school celebrations.

Excavation and reinforcement work in the station worksite pit will continue until the end of 2013.

Open excavation begins at Urheilupuisto station site – pedestrian and cycle path remains closed

Reinforcement work is currently in progress at the Urheilupuisto station site, and open excavation will begin in the pit in mid-May. The excavation work will continue until the end of 2013. The pedestrian and cycle path to the south of Esport Center will remain closed for the time being because of the open excavation and other construction work.

Unlike the other stations on the West Metro line, the Urheilupuisto station is being built on the cut-and-cover principle. Because of this, the pedestrian and cycle path to the south of Esport Center has been diverted to the north side. The original aim was to reopen the path while the work is still in progress, but this has been abandoned for the time being for safety reasons.

We regret the inconvenience caused to local residents by the worksite.

New contracts signed

Agreements for the electrical, HVAC and structure-borne sound insulation contracts for Länsimetro’s station in Tapiola signed 9 September 2103. ARE Oy was chosen as the station’s electrical contractor. The total contract price is EUR 3.4 million. The Tapiola station’s HVAC contract was awarded to EMC Talotekniikka Oy. This contract is worth EUR 3.6 million.

An agreement for the delivery of structure-borne sound insulation materials for the west metro was also signed today. The project’s insulation material contracts have been divided into separate deliveries according to insulation class. The delivery contract for insulation class 16 dB was awarded to Christian Berner Oy. The total contract price is approximately EUR 230.000. The 16 dB material will mostly be used for rail junctions near stations and close to the surface. The structure-borne sound insulation material will be installed under the metro tracks to prevent vibration and noise from being transmitted to the surrounding rock and thereby to the immediate environment. The use of insulation materials is based on calculations performed in vibration and sound-engineering studies.

– “Most of the contracts involved in the construction project have now been awarded. The excavation work for the line will be completed by the end of the year, allowing construction to begin along the entire length of the line. The West Metro project is a major employer, and the line’s completion will require a total of 4,900 person years”, says Länsimetro CEO Matti Kokkinen.

Changes in excavation times at the Niittykumpu metro worksite: Saturday blasting to begin on 6 April

Changes in excavation times at the Niittykumpu metro worksite: Saturday blasting to begin on 6 April
YIT is currently excavating the site of the Niittykumpu metro station and the adjacent twin tunnels.

According a decision issued by the Uusimaa Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment, drilling may be done at weekends, and blasting work may be carried out in the tunnels on weekdays (Monday to Friday) between 07.00 and 22.00, and also on Saturdays between 07.00 and 22.00. However, blasting will be avoided as far as possible on Saturday mornings between 07.00 and 09.00.

Saturday blasting will begin on 6 April 2013. Saturday blasting will allow the work to be completed more quickly. Because of the rotation of work phases, it may be that blasting will not be required every Saturday.

Excavation at the Niittykumpu worksite will continue until the end of 2013. The West Metro will be finally completed in 2015.
