Ecological ground heat used for energy production at the Sammalvuori depot

The drilling of a test hole for a ground heat well was started at Länsimetro’s Sammalvuori depot on Monday, July 10th. When finished, the depot gets part of its energy from environment friendly and cost effective ground heat.

“At the depot, ground heat is needed to heat the depot premises, which means that the ecological point of view has been taken into consideration”, says Minna Alantie, supervisor of the depot’s excavation work.

The purpose of drilling a test hole is to monitor how the drilling progresses and how the bedrock reacts to it. The test hole is subjected to trt measurements that give an indication of the soil’s thermal conductivity. Protecting tubes made of plastic will also be installed inside the rock to protect the ground heat tubes. The depth of the test hole is 300 meters.

The heating and cooling systems of the depot will be based primarily on the use of geoenergy. You can learn about the functioning principles of ground heat by using, for example, this illustrative picture.

A large graffiti work of art to Matinkylä

When walking along Suomenlahdentie in Matinkylä one runs into a big seagull behind Iso Omena. The bird covers the entire wall and stands out from its environment. The painting is located on the Länsimetro access tunnel’s building.

The artist Emilio Mäkipää is putting the finishing touches on the seagull, spray can in hand. In June, he is realizing an extensive graffiti project at Länsimetro’s request. In addition to the seagull, a second wall features the underwater world, and a third wall has creatures of the forest painted onto it. The main entrance will be painted in more subdued hues of beige, orange and red.

“Before starting the job, I asked Facebook’s Puskaradio Espoo group and people around Iso Omena about the animals they would like to see. The same wishes came up on the Internet and face to face. Residents especially asked for seaside views, swans and seagulls”, says Mäkipää.

In addition to the shore, on the other side of the building by the promenade, foxes and a robin stare at people passing by. The robin was also something the residents especially wanted to see.

The painting project has already progressed far. It has lasted five days, and a few more days are needed to finish. The finishing touches of the background painting and adding details still remain to be done.

“I will add some graphic style along the edges. It will blend slowly to the foggier pictures”, says Mäkipää.

The paintings are made to stand the test of time. A graffiti will last up to five years when necessary. Resilience is necessary as the entrance to the entire access tunnel will be located under and in the middle of subsequent buildings. The area will contain, for example, a school and an indoor swimming pool.

Smoke extraction fans are being serviced near the Länsimetro stations in summertime

Measures corresponding to yearly service will done to the Länsimetro rail line’s smoke extraction fans before handing the stations and railway over to HKL.

The servicing work will start on June 16th from Ruoholahti and will be performed close to all stations (Lauttasaari, Koivusaari, Keilaniemi, Aalto University, Tapiola, Urheilupuisto, Niittykumpu, Matinkylä).

During servicing, the fans are run at full power for a few minutes, and the service use causes noise around them. The service will be executed during working hours from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. The work will be finished by the end of July.

The smoke extraction fans will be used in emergencies to blow smoke from underground areas through the shafts to open air. There are a total of 32 smoke extraction fans in the Ruoholahti–Matinkylä section.

Länsimetro announcement: The testing phase of Länsimetro has ended and official inspections have started – it is estimated that metro services will begin running in September

The testing phase of Länsimetro has ended. The last joint system test run, which was used to test the functioning of all systems of the station in emergency situations, was performed at the Matinkylä station during the first week of June. HKL’s test runs were completed in May, and the Länsimetro authority inspection phase has now started and will continue until early August. During the summer, the metro stations and the rail line will be handed over to HKL to maintain.

– According to a previous estimate, metro services could start in September 2017. Time must be reserved for the official inspection phase and any required repairs. This is the largest handing over process for a construction project ever carried out in Finland, states Ville Saksi, CEO of Länsimetro Ltd.

The date on which the metro services will begin running will be confirmed in mid-August, after the last authority inspection is completed. Bus traffic will switch to feeder network routes and schedules in mid-August at the earliest. Until then, the South Espoo and Lauttasaari buses will operate on their current routes. HSL will decide when the services begin and when the transfer to feeder traffic is made.

Construction near the metro will continue far into the future.

– Länsimetro’s task has been to build a safe and reliable metro. The metro is an investment that brings new vitality to the entire metropolitan area. The Tapiola area alone has seen and will see the construction of new buildings worth around a billion euros, sums up Olli Isotalo, Chairman of Länsimetro’s Board.
