The metro - quality and safety

The objective of the west metro project is to produce a presentable, modern and sustainable metro system of high quality allowing passengers to enjoy the benefits of a fast form of public transport, safely and flexibly. The starting points for the design of the west metro include automation, use of state-of-the-art technology, and solutions promoting safety.

The west metro will connect to the existing metro line, and will be designed to allow traffic using the current rolling stock. When the west metro is introduced, the entire metro line will become automated, i.e. driverless.

Trains will operate between Matinkylä and Mellunmäki and between Tapiola and Vuosaari. Trains are planned to operate between Tapiola and Itäkeskus at 2.5-minute intervals during the morning and afternoon rush hours. As necessary, the interval can be later shortened to two minutes.
